Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in Art and Design

For those who possess a creative talent, an exciting career awaits. This course helps develop practical skills within a range of art and design specialist areas. In year 1, you will be introduced to materials, techniques and processes associated with Fine Art, Photography, Graphic Design, Ceramics and Fashion and Textiles, as well as expanding your contextual understanding and develop your research skills. In year 2, you choose two specialist pathways and explore a wide range of media, responding to creative briefs. All practical work will be supported by the study of Art theory and history.

Entry Requirements

Four GCSEs at grade 4/5 or above, including a minimum of a 4/5 grade in GCSE English or a Level 2 BTEC Art and Design Qualification with a Merit grade profile. All applicants will be required to present a portfolio of work at interview. Students without a grade 4/5 in GCSE Maths or English will need to study this qualification as part of their programme.

What do I need to bring?

All students should maintain and carry a basic kit containing pens, pencils and a sketchbook.

Assessment/Exam information

The course is assessed by a variety of methods including: projects, assignments, presentations and course work; Some of these are internally assessed whilst others will be externally assessed via exams or external tasks. All assessment is verified by an external examiner to maintain national quality and standards.

All work is graded using a scale of Pass, Merit and Distinction. The course is unit based and presents continuous assessment opportunities, as opposed to a final examination; therefore, your progress can be accurately tracked and assessed throughout the entire programme, offering you the opportunity to improve your grades.

Other information

During the course students develop a range of transferable skills, which play an essential role in developing personal effectiveness for adult and working life and in the application of specific vocational skills.

What can I do next?

Progress onto a BA programmes in Graphics or Illustration, our Foundation degree in Creative Arts and Design Practice or one of our HND courses. Alternatively a HE courses offered by universities.

Any extra costs

All students will be charged a trips and exhibition fee, which includes an Art Kit. The total cost of this is £65. Other costs may be incurred in the production of project work.
