Swindon College Student Alexandra Richardson Wins Prestigious Award at New Designers 2018

30 July 2018

Swindon College Student Alexandra Richardson is celebrating after winning a prestigious award at New Designers 2018!  She has won the New Designers Zizzi Fresh Talent Award, with her Creative Conservation Collective, which will see her assisting in creating a memorable piece of artwork for one of Zizzi’s restaurants and give her the opportunity to work alongside the incredibly talented team of Fresh Talent artists.  Alexandra has just finished the BA (Hons) Graphic Design, a course run at Swindon College in partnership with Oxford Brookes University.

Alexandra says: “Winning the New Designers Zizzi Fresh Talent Award has meant so much to me, the awards offer a fantastic opportunity for young designers to have their work recognised and I am so grateful to benefit from this. The opportunity to be working with Zizzi to create artwork for one of their restaurants is exciting and will give me great industry experience, also supporting my career goals.”

The award Judges’ comments were: 'Alexandra's artwork is beautifully detailed, layering texture with pattern and excellent colour choice, we all loved her work!'

Alexandra will receive £500 and the opportunity to work alongside one of Zizzi's artists on site. All expenses associated with the work experience will be paid including travel and accommodation if required.

The criteria for the award was to find an inspiring graduate to assist in painting a memorable piece of artwork in one of Zizzi's restaurants and it would be given to an illustrator or artist who stood out from the crowd and demonstrated the following qualities through their work:

  • Creativity and uniqueness
  • Instagrammable features
  • Storytelling through illustration
  • Exceptional colour work
  • Attention to detail and technical skill
  • Can demonstrate understanding and provide examples of working at large scale as full size wall mural

Head of Learning for the Art & Design Department, Sue Rees, said she was thrilled that Alexandra had won, as she knows how much work has gone into her designs.  Programme Leader Dave Caton said: “New Designers is a fantastic opportunity for our students to showcase their talent and knowing that the event is attended by the majority of English universities which specialise in product design, illustration, graphic design and interactive/animation degrees, means this is a major achievement for Alexandra and Swindon College’s Art & Design department.”
