Hospitality Department Host Restaurant Challenge

16 July 2019

Swindon College Hospitality department hosted The Restaurant Challenge, sponsored by The Rotary Club of Swindon Thamesdown. Students came together to compete in a series of challenges in Swindon College’s Training Restaurant. Members from the Rotary Club as well as the Event Operations Manager Becky Drayton from Thyme attended the event and contributed to the judging of the contest.

The first category was a Themed Table relating to a music genre and students were tasked to create a table setup with the following: 2 place settings, glasses, napkins, decorations, a food menu relating to the chosen theme and an arrival drink. This all had to be laid in a set time. A wide range of themes were created and executed in under 20 minutes ranging from Disney to Reggae!

The second challenge was Napkin Folding where students were tasked to create 3 folds for Fine Dining, Banquet and Room Service.

Finally, students were challenged with Cocktail Mixing! Students had to mix and present a Cocktail with a menu card whilst ensuring they were working in a safe, organised and tidy fashion to mix and present a cocktail of their choice.

Winners received a share of £100 donated by The Rotary Club of Swindon Thamesdown.

Demi Miles, Bradley Rooney and Liam Short won best Themed Music Award Table with Theatre Music. They each received a £20 voucher for Miller and Carter Steak House.

Demi Miles also won the Napkin challenge and received a £20.00 Cinema card.

Aiden Baker with his Tequila Sunrise won best cocktail making and received a cocktail making set.

Faith Marles, Front of House Lecturer for Hospitality said: “I am very proud of the way the students had performed and they had been creative in their themed table planning.  They all displayed professionalism and the skills that they have learned over the year.”

Faith also wanted to thank all of their customers of the Restaurant this year for helping to support student’s progression. The Restaurant will be open again from October 2019 and welcome members of the public to join us for lunch, dinner and our themed nights.
