What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are an excellent way to gain qualifications through study in conjunction with practical training in the workplace. During the week you will learn and train in your chosen career in the workplace and at college.

Apprenticeships take 1 to 5 years to complete depending on the level of the qualification, during this time you will gain valuable work experience and occupational contacts.

An Apprenticeship is an excellent way to:

  • Gain qualifications combined with practical skills
  • Gain workplace experience and occupational contacts
  • Improve your employability
  • Earn a regular income whilst getting the training you need to progress in your chosen career

What you will Study

There are 2 types of Apprenticeships: Framework and Standard

Framework Apprenticeships are made up of either:

  • One combined competence and knowledge qualification
  • One competence qualification and one knowledge qualification

All Framework Apprenticeships are assessed through practical observation, work-based portfolio, and end of module exams.

Standard Apprenticeships are the newest type of Apprenticeships that are made up of either:

  • One overarching qualification
  • One overarching qualification and other relevant qualifications

All Standards have a pass/fail End Point Assessment (EPA).

Entry Criteria

All Frameworks / Standards require English and Maths at an appropriate level and some also require ICT. If you do not already hold a level 2 qualification in English and Maths, such as GCSE C/4, you must work towards Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths as part of your programme.
