Frequently Asked Questions

1. What type of Early Years courses do you offer?
There’s a choice of two Diplomas available to study at Swindon College, each designed to prepare you for a rewarding career in Early Years and Childcare. Check out our website or prospectus for more details.

2. What different course levels are available to study?
We offer a Level 2 Diploma, and a slightly more advanced Level 3.

3. What grades and qualifications do I need to enrol?
To enrol on the Level 2 Diploma, you need four GCSEs grade 3 or above including English, Maths. Level 3 requires four GCSE grades 4 or above, including English, Maths or the Level 2 qualification in childcare/early years at achieved and, GCSE grade 4 or above in English and Maths. Both require a clear DBS check.

4. How long do the courses take to complete?
Level 2 is full time study and is one year to complete. Level 3 will take two years to complete.

5. What kind of work will I be doing?
The Level 2 course prepares learners to work with children between birth and five years with knowledge of children up to seven years. You will be providing assignments to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding; presentations; role play and an assessment in the workplace.
For Level 3 you will study a range of subjects including: professional development, child development, use of observation and assessment, principles of safeguarding, theories that underpin practice in the early years’ sector, supporting children’s speech, and communication development.
6. What about work placements?
The Level 2 course requires you to attend a work placement where observations and activities take place for a minimum of 250 hours. For Level 3 you will be required to attend a weekly workplace to achieve the required hours of the course which is 750 hours across 2 years. We enjoy close links with Nurseries, Schools and Childminders too, so there’s plenty of opportunities for work placements.

7. What kind of careers will be open to me once qualified?
There’s a variety of roles you can enter into once qualified. You could consider working as a Nursery Nurse, Nursery Assistant, Early Years Teacher, childminder, Youth Worker and overseas opportunities to name a few.
